Project Focus: Offshore Structural Tubulars

Sector: Offshore Energy / Structural Fabrication
Challenge: 4,000-ton material cancellation after plate delivery
Volume: 4,000 metric tons of structural steel plate

Overview
A prominent offshore contractor secured a major project to fabricate jackets for the Gulf of Mexico. Due to strict material specs not available domestically, Interpipe was engaged to source 4,000 metric tons of structural steel plate from Europe for rolling into tubulars. However, after all plate had been delivered to the pipe mill, the end user canceled the project—putting the contractor and the mill at serious financial risk.

Solution
Interpipe mobilized to contain the impact and protect all parties involved:

  • Global Sales Outreach: Activated our global customer base to identify secondary demand for offshore-grade structural plate.
  • Inventory Repositioning: Strategically reallocated the material to qualified buyers across compatible sectors.
  • Mill Partnership Management: Coordinated closely with the European mill to maintain relationships and protect production capacity.

Interpipe successfully resold the plate, minimizing financial exposure for both the offshore contractor and the pipe mill. The client avoided a multimillion-dollar write-off, and the mill’s operations remained uninterrupted.

Even the best-laid project plans can unravel. Interpipe’s ability to react swiftly and leverage its market network turned a potential loss into a salvageable outcome—reinforcing our value as a full-scope project partner, even when circumstances change.
