Sector: Midstream / Gas Infrastructure
Challenge: Urgent delivery for large OD heavy-wall pipe; design spec originally called for 36″ x 1.75″ in X65
Volume: Critical section of high-pressure pipeline
Overview
A natural gas storage customer faced a compressed development schedule to bring a new gas plant online. A key section of the high-pressure pipeline required 36″ OD x 1.75″ WT pipe in API 5L X65—a product with an estimated 6–8 month lead time if ordered via mill run. That delay was a non-starter.
Solution
Interpipe responded quickly by leveraging offshore supply relationships to engineer a viable alternative:
- Sourcing Leverage: Identified available inventory of 36″ OD x 2″ WT pipe in API 5L X70—a higher grade that could meet the project’s pressure and weldability criteria.
- Engineering Support: Worked with the client’s project team to confirm that the slight spec adjustment would meet all functional and regulatory needs.
- End-to-End Coordination: Managed pipe facing, beveling, coating, storage, and final delivery to site—all under tight time constraints.
By pivoting to a 2″ wall pipe in X70, Interpipe cut the delivery timeline by months and kept the gas plant construction on track. The alternate spec not only satisfied the performance requirements but also allowed the project to avoid major design changes or delays.
When speed and pressure collide, creative sourcing wins. Interpipe’s network and technical agility turned a supply chain challenge into a successful outcome.
